This is Smilin' Sam , and he says: WELCOME TO KARLYN'S BASENJIS, WE HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR STAY!! |
This was our first home-bred Champoin Great Dane. You can see where my love for brindles came from. It seems to have carried over from our days in Danes. |

While we loved our Danes, they broke our hearts. Their life span is just too short. So, we started looking for a breed that would get along with the Danes, but live longer and not have so many health problems. |
We started out with two Basenji show dogs, a female from The Woz kennel named Karlyn's Impersonator of Woz (Imp) and a male from Nancy Moore named Moores Rowdy Rebel of Karlyn(Rowdy). We had not yet learned that whatever you name a B will come back to haunt you. While Imp did not turn out to be show quality, Rowdy most definately did! He not only won his share in the show ring, he was a super family dog, and dearly loved to play both with the Danes and later with Basenji pups. We learned a lot from both Imp and Rowdy. While Imp was never bred, we did have a couple of litters from Rowdy. More on them later. |

We received a replacement from Cecelia Wozniak for Imp and named her Tori. Her registered name was Ch. Karlyn's inquisitor of Woz. While she was a very willing show dog, her biggest claim to fame came when we got the chance to breed her to a full African import. Avongara Diagba. That is when everything would change at Karlyn. |
I thought I was experienced in whelping and raising pups until this litter was born. First there was a set of twins! Born in the same sack and mirror images. We named them Dilly and Dally, and while neither of them liked to show, they do have several BIS's and group placements....AS A BRACE. They were loads of fun, but soon it was time to find a "fella" for one. We decided to breed Dilly. |
THE START OF A LASTING FREINDSHIP.... |
Karla and Max A.K.A. Karla Schreiber and Ch. Kibushi's Anything Goes. |

Dilly was bred to Max after the longest heat cycle I can ever remember, but after 63 days....pups. They all looked normal except one. She was born coal black. By the time she turned about 3 weeks old she has stripes, but we should have known something was up. We debated on what to do with her, and in the end decided to keep her. She is a fun dog, and her conformation was very good. So she is our first co-owned Basenji. When she was just under 6 months she went to her first match and took a group one. We thought we would have smooth sailing from there, but it was not to be. When she shed out that year she had a saddle. We did not know what to do, but since she already had some points, we decided to continue showing her. Well, that was an experience! Judges either loved her or they hated her. As you can see in the picture, she finished her Championship and even more suprising, when she shed out the next time.....no saddle, just a dark brindle. That was just our first of many suprises when it comes to Smudge (Ch. Karlyn's New World Order). |

AND IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER!! |

While Karla and I debated over who Smudge should be bred to....Smudge decided to take matters into her own paws. Quietly coming into heat and accepting the advances of her house mate, Mo (Karlyn's Mohawk Warrior). We came home from a local show to find them "in the throes of passion". As soon as possible Smudge went for a long run with a lot of jumping up on things but it was to no avail. Even though the Vet said she was NOT pregnant, at the appropriate time I came home from work to see Smudge happily nursing two pups. One boy and one girl, we thought them both to be tri's. As they started to grow it soon was very obvious that they were not simple tri's, they were Brindle pointed Tri's (Trindles). Now things were even more complicated. What to do with two Trindles? Welllll, we always said the color didn't matter on a natural dog like the Basenji, so the choice was made....they too would be shown. Everyone said the boy put me under his spell. so he was named Karlyn New World Incantation(Sam) and his sister was named Karlyn New World Incredulous (Liz). We all kept plugging away and again, judges either loved them or they hated them. Sometimes we were ignored or could hear comments from the people at ringside, other times they were greatly admired. Then come the Wisconsin Specialty where we entered them both in the open Black Tan and White classes. We couldn't see any other colors on them so figured that was the class to enter. Well to make a long story short, Sam took the class and then went on to take Winners Dog under breeder judge, Robert House. Less than a month later Liz finished her championship also making them the first two Brindle Pointed Tri (Trindle) AKC champions. We are just so proud we could bust. Now we just have to wait till we find the perfect mates for them. And I can assure you neither of them are allowed with any Basenji of the opposite sex unsupervised. |
